It has been less than six months since Future Rail last covered climate change and the impact extreme weather conditions can have on UK railways. In the summer, a new season of heavy rains and floods headed to Britain, causing a train crash that claimed three deaths.
According to national infrastructure manager Network Rail, a train driver, a conductor and a passenger died in a derailment in August after “the force of thousands of gallons of water flowing from [a] breached canal bank” damaged tracks and eventually knocked a train off of them near Stonehaven in rural Scotland.

These deaths were the firstfatalities seen on a train in Britain in over 13 years, though the crash was one of manyto be reportedly caused and aggravated by climate change, rising temperatures and intense rainfall.
Speaking in the aftermath of the tragedy, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said lessons will need to be learnt from the accident to ensure British railways are safer and more resilient in the face of harsher weather. We’ve rounded up key lessons from the incident below.

LED Safety Lighting for railway vehicles
Our low maintenance LEDMLD dual marker and single marker safety lights are designed for energy efficiency and a long lifespan. Innovec LED products are used on metro and suburban railway networks in Australia, as well as freight locomotives and transport applications such as the mining industry.
We believe in industry innovation, where reliability, low maintenance and long lamp lifecycle for rail vehicles and trams is essential. This is important as Australia has some of the world’s heaviest and longest freight trains and large urban rail networks, while Melbourne has the world’s largest light rail (tram) system.
LED safety lighting has been provided for railway projects in Scandinavia, India, the USA, and mainland Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.LED safety lights have been used on railway vehicles across Australia, Norway, India and the US.

Eco-friendly LED Safety Lights for trains
Norwegian State Railways (NSB).LED safety lights have been used on railway vehicles across Australia, Norway, India and the US.
NSB required advanced lights for its type 92 vehicles that could withstand adverse conditions as the vehicles operated in the country’s Trondheim region, through Sweden and Norway to Finland.
The LEDMLD LED dual marker light is a compact red and white marker light is a perfect combination of reliability and versatility, with a sealed and impact resistant enclosure. It functions to -40°C to withstand the blistering cold of the Scandinavian Arctic, offering high-visibility LED display and low-power consumption.Innovec Controls offers LED dual marker and single marker safety lights with optimal energy efficiency.

LED lights installed on ‘E-Class’ trams in Melbourne were awarded the Australia Good Design Award in 2014. They are the first trams to be built in Australia in more than 12 years and feature 40% locally sourced materials, including the amber LED indicators and red LED stop and tail lights.
The lights are designed as a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution that matches the exterior tram design.
We were involved in the supply of Marker Lights for Bombardier’s VLocity intercity trains in Victoria.
In New South Wales, we were chosen to supply 3,000 LED Marker safety lights and 1,000 Guards Blue Lights for the Tangara Metro fleet upgrade. The order included long-life single front and rear marker LED lights for the vehicles.
In Western Australia, we supplied our marker safety lights to the Perth PURD urban rail project.
Energy-efficient Addictive Injection Controllers
Innovec Controls is a leading manufacturer of specialised batch controllers, with injection controllers being used worldwide.
The IAC additive injection controller is designed for fuel storage tank facilities, aiming to provide accurate and easy-to-operate mixing and blending of fuel additives and liquids with simplified programming.
Our additive injection controllers are perfect for rail providers where locomotives use large amounts of fuel. These self-contained measurement and control systems were specially designed for users to easily inject the additives into the fuel, offering major cost savings in the mixing and blending of fuel additives and liquids that help improve fuel-burning efficiency.
For our additive injection controllers we supply a three channel and six channel controllers, we have worked with a wide range of companies, including oil processors such as Shell, Exxon, and BP.
The IAI Additive Injection Controllers are self-contained measurement and control systems designed to allow fuel companies and distributors to accurately blend or mix primary fuels with additives at storage tank facilities to supply transport fuels to commercial and industrial end users.
